The battle was fought between the Anglo-Dutch fleet commanded by Count Arthur Herbert Torrington. Allied fleet consisted of 56 ships, including 22 Dutch formed the vanguard under the command of Cornelis Evertsen. Vice-Admiral Ralph Delavall commanded 12 ships, forming a strong ariegardÄ™ allied fleet.
